Instagram may not seem like the obvious social media marketing platform for your business. This might be especially true if your business is service-based or not particularly image-led.

Yet, the photo sharing site is the third largest social media platform in the world behind Facebook and YouTube. One billion users log onto it every month and users are checking it multiple times per day.

So, the opportunities to reach new audiences are huge. Even if you are a service-based business.

Let’s take a look at 5 reasons why you need Instagram for your business.

Close conversation

Instagram is known for creating small communities on its site. These are usually found through particular hashtags. If you are looking for a certain set of people to know about your brand, then all you need to do is find the right hashtags and it will allow you to connect with those people.

For example, #bookstagram is a hugely popular hashtag on Instagram used by publishers, writers and bibliophiles. If you were looking to curate a following of well-read adults, then this would be a good place to start a conversation.

Instagram isn’t show and tell. People like to feel more connected to the brands and influencers on the platform.  Which is why it’s a great place to start the conversation and build a stronger connection to your potential clients.

In fact, engagement with brands on Instagram is 10 times higher than Facebook, 54 times higher than Pinterest, and 84 times higher than Twitter. (Link: That’s a lot of conversation.

Evergreen Content

It may not seem like it at first but Instagram is great for holding evergreen content. Evergreen is a term used to describe your most popular piece of content. That blog post which brings in all the traffic and keeps getting shared.

If you have a particularly powerful image or message that you want people to see no matter when they find you, then Instagram has the capacity to do this. This is useful if you have products to launch or a particular message you want your audience to read.

While most social media platforms have a short life-cycle for content, you can highlight your most important content on your profile.

Simply upload it as an Instagram story and then when it is running, set it as a highlight. This keeps the content at the top of the grid on your profile for as long as you need.

Take a look at how Norty Puds (link: has used their highlights. They have set up five categories that each tell the brand story and spell out the brand name. Each highlight is created within the brand voice and use animation, music and video.

Personal Touch

One of the most common misconceptions we hear about Instagram for businesses is that it doesn’t work for service-based businesses. We simply don’t think this is true.

When used well, Instagram is a brilliant platform for building trust with your future clients. It lets them know who the person is behind the brand. That you are servicing your clients well, solving their problems and keeping them happy.

Humanise your brand

You can do this through sharing your day, showing work-in-progress, how you balance work and personal life. You can add in your personal flair to your feed. It makes your brand look human.

It also has great video functionality which means you are builder a closer connection to your audience.  In fact, there has been an 80% increase in video on the site in the past year. (Link:

It drives website traffic

According to a recent study, 75% of users visit a website from Instagram. ( and these people are more likely to buy a product or service as a result.  One more reason to make sure your website is mobile-friendly.

Instagrammers love brands

A whopping 80% of all Instagram users follow a business account. And if you’re looking to reach that younger audience then Instagram is the place to be when 64% of 18-29 year old are on the platform. (
